Threaded insert:
First, I snooped around the hardware store to see what they had in the way of threaded inserts. This one had a very aggressive thread and installed by screwing it in with an Allen wrench. I removed the strap button from the end of the bass, enlarged the hole and installed the threaded insert. This one accommodates a 1/4" x 20 thread.

Set screw/strap button:
I was still going to need a strap button, and also a set screw to
attach the end pin. I removed the head from a 1/4"x 20 screw,
chucked it up in my lathe and turned a section down and threaded
it 10-24 to fit in the knurled brass nut (also from the local hardware store).
Adapter:
I machined the adapter from a piece of 1/4" mild steel rod. I cut the disk from a piece of 1/8" aluminum flat stock, bored a hole in the center, threaded it 1/4" x 20, screwed it on and applied Loc-Tite thread locker to keep it in place. I cut a groove in the end of the rod to accommodate a screwdriver or, in a pinch, a dime.
Endpin:
The endpin was made from a leg of an inexpensive camera tripod that someone gave me. I chucked a piece of brass bar stock in my lathe, drilled and reamed it until it was a very close fit on the smooth end of the adapter. Then I turned it until it was a very tight pressure fit in the tube and hammered it in. I put the completed assembly in a drill press and drilled and threaded the hole to accommodate the set screw/strap button and cemented a piece of approx 3/32" rubber for a tighter fit than metal to metal contact.

No attempt has been made to show the pictures to any particular scale. I was trying to get the pictures small enough and clear enough to allow viewing for those who aren't fortunate enough to have a broadband connection.
